SHOWCASE SECTIONS

The festival has three (3) showcase screening sections. Acceptance is by invitation only. Projects submitted to any of the competitive categories can be considered for this section should they not be eligible to compete. Narrative features and documentaries that have had three (3) or more previous festival screenings should submit to the Showcase section in lieu of the competitive sections.

Each category is described below, along with the submissions criteria, deadlines and fees.

World Showcase: A non-competitive section for narrative and documentary feature films made by persons of African descent or depicting a multicultural experience.

Criteria:

  • Entrants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Writer, director or producer must be a person of African descent.
  • Section is open to U.S. and international entries.
  • Must be in the English language or contain English-language subtitles.
  • Films must have completed principal photography on or after January 1, 2018.
  • Runtimes: Please follow the same runtimes for the documentary and narrative competitive sections.

Emerging Directors Showcase: Narratives, documentaries, message-related videos and other content from directors of African descent.

Criteria:

  • Entrants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Director must be a person of African descent.
  • Content must have a multicultural perspective.
  • Open to U.S. and international entries.
  • Must be in the English language or contain English-language subtitles.
  • Films must have completed principal photography on or after January 1, 2018.
  • 45- minute maximum runtime inclusive of credits

Social Impact Showcase: A curated section for content based on cause-related topics affecting communities of color. These films provide perspectives that are different from mainstream media portrayals, thereby positively affecting society’s view of the subject.

The 2019 Social Impact Showcase topic will be Fatherhood: The Foundation of the Black Family.

Criteria:

  • Entrants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Film content must have a perspective on the topic of black men as fathers.
  • Competition is open to U.S. and international entries.
  • Films must be in the English language or contain English-language subtitles.
  • Films must have completed principal photography on or after January 1, 2017.
