Jeff Friday
Entertainment Executive | Producer | Cultural Institution Builder

Jeff Friday is a pioneering entertainment executive, producer and cultural institution builder whose work has helped reshape Black cinema and expand pathways into the motion picture industry. He is the original founder of the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) and Co-Founder and CEO of NICE CROWD. Over more than three decades, Friday has built and led influential platforms connecting creative talent with studios, distributors, financiers, corporate partners and audiences. His work as a festival founder, producer, film financier and mentor has earned him widespread respect throughout the entertainment industry.

At the center of Friday’s legacy is ABFF, which he founded in 1997 after recognizing the need for a platform that could introduce talented filmmakers of color to the industry at large. That conviction led him to leave a successful career in advertising and build what would become the nation’s leading platform dedicated to advancing the careers of artists of African descent. What began as an exhibition opportunity has evolved into an expansive creative and professional ecosystem built around film premieres, competitive awards, mentorship and direct industry access.

In partnership with HBO, Friday co-founded the HBO Short Film Competition, establishing what would become one of the industry’s most prestigious showcases for emerging filmmakers. Now in its 30th year, the competition has served as an early industry platform for directors and creators who went on to build successful careers, including Ryan Coogler, Steven Caple Jr., Reinaldo Marcus Green, Ben Watkins and Nikyatu Jusu. Through ABFF’s broader programming, Friday has also connected writers, producers and other creators directly with executives, collaborators, financiers, distributors and audiences. He began this work long before representation and inclusion became broad industry priorities.

ABFF’s archives have been accepted by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, affirming the festival’s enduring place in the nation’s cultural history. In 2027, ABFF will begin its next chapter in Los Angeles, bringing its programming and talent-development mission into even closer proximity to the entertainment industry while extending the legacy Friday began three decades earlier.

Friday’s commitment to championing talent spans the full arc of an artist’s career. Through ABFF Honors, he created an annual awards-season gala recognizing actors and filmmakers whose bodies of work have made lasting contributions to the motion picture industry. Over the years, the event has celebrated some of the industry’s most distinguished artists, including Sidney Poitier, Cicely Tyson, Denzel Washington, Diahann Carroll, Morgan Freeman, Billy Dee Williams and Louis Gossett Jr. Together, ABFF and ABFF Honors reflect Friday’s commitment to discovering new voices, recognizing excellence and preserving the legacies of accomplished artists.

Through Jeff Friday Media, his production company, Friday has developed and financed film and television projects and established relationships with major entertainment companies, including Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. Discovery. He served as an executive producer of the acclaimed HBO feature documentaries Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn and Donyale Luna: Supermodel. Friday also created and produced Hollywood Homecoming, a Webby Award-winning digital reunion series developed in association with IMDb that brought together the directors and casts of iconic Black films. His television credits also include Black Movie Awards for TNT and ABFF Honors for BET. Friday is also a member of the Writers Guild of America East.

Before becoming an entrepreneur, Friday built a successful career in advertising and consumer marketing. He served as President of UniWorld Entertainment, a division of UniWorld Group, then one of the nation’s leading multicultural advertising agencies. He previously held brand-management positions with Moët & Chandon/LVMH and Bristol-Myers International. That foundation in business strategy and consumer engagement has shaped his approach to creating sustainable entertainment properties and lasting partnerships.

Friday is also the creator of the Pro Hollywood Boot Camp, an innovative career-development program established in partnership with the National Football League that provides current and former players with hands-on training and mentorship in the creative and business aspects of the motion picture industry.

Beyond his business ventures, Friday is deeply committed to philanthropy, education and youth empowerment. He has spoken at leading institutions, including Howard University and Harvard University, and in 2025 served as commencement speaker for Howard University’s School of Communications. He also co-founded the Art in Black Foundation with his son Ellis to promote the work of Black fine artists throughout the United States and across the African continent.

Friday’s contributions have earned national recognition. He has been named one of Black Enterprise‘s Top 50 Hollywood Power Brokers and one of Ebony magazine’s 150 Most Influential Blacks in America, and he recently received New York University’s Global Trailblazer Award for Entrepreneurial Innovation. His work has been profiled and covered by leading publications, including Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Forbes and Essence. In 2026, he authored guest columns for Variety and TheWrap, contributing his perspective on the importance of Black cultural institutions and the role of reputation, collaboration and integrity in Hollywood. In recognition of his accomplishments and contributions, his hometown of Newark, New Jersey, proclaimed “Jeff Friday Day” in his honor.

Friday holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from Howard University and a Master of Business Administration in Marketing from New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business. He continues to shape the future of entertainment by building institutions that elevate talent, create access and ensure that powerful stories and artistic legacies endure.
