Screening Committee

The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) is seeking passionate, thoughtful, and dependable film lovers to join our Screening Team.

Screeners evaluate festival submissions and provide feedback to help inform programming decisions. Successful screeners can assess films across genres, budgets, and filmmaking styles while separating personal taste from a film’s artistic execution.

Responsibilities

• Watch assigned films in their entirety.
• Commit a minimum of 6 hours per week to screening assignments.
• Submit evaluations and scores by assigned deadlines.
• Participate in mandatory 30-minute selection review meetings to discuss evaluations and recommend films for advancement to the next round.
• Maintain strict confidentiality regarding submissions and festival information.
• Complete assignments consistently throughout the screening period.

Qualifications

• Passion for cinema and independent filmmaking.
• Strong critical-thinking and written communication skills.
• Ability to provide constructive, objective feedback.
• Strong organization and time-management skills.
• Previous festival screening or programming experience is welcome but not required.

Evaluation & AI Policy

All evaluations and scores must reflect the screener’s own viewing experience, judgment, and opinion. AI-generated or AI-assisted evaluations, scores, summaries, recommendations, or written feedback are not permitted. All submitted work must be the screener’s original work.

Compensation

Screeners will be compensated $35 per project for films 30 minutes or longer and $15 per project for films under 30 minutes. Compensation is payable monthly upon receipt of a completed invoice and W-9.
